Maria Chaparro is a skilled, warm, and sensitive clinician with training in the treatment of mood, anxiety, and eating disorders. She has ample experience in health psychology working with individuals with chronic and life-threatening illness including cancer, heart disease, and obesity. She is also experienced in working with young adults undergoing difficult life transitions with a variety of mental health concerns. Other areas of clinical interest include parenting and positive discipline, relationship difficulties, identity development and meaning making.
She is inspired by her clients’ ability to thrive on challenges and motivation to engage in change. In a non-judgemental and confidential atmosphere, Maria’s practice uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as her preferred evidenced-based treatment approach, also drawing on DBT and ACT approaches. She works with adults and couples at Thrive, and provides therapy in both English and Spanish.
Maria completed the requirements for her PhD in Psychology at the University of Toronto (degree conferral: 11/2015) and has worked in various hospital settings including Toronto Western Hospital, Toronto General Hospital and Lakeridge Health. She has also worked in the university counselling centres at McMaster University and Ryerson University. Maria is pleased to be supervised at Thrive by Dr. Chelsea Sherrington, C.Psych., clinical and health psychologist in good standing with the College of Psychologists of Ontario.
