Chiropractic is a discipline of healing rooted in science, art and philosophy. It is based on the direct relationship between the integrity of your nervous system and the health of your body. Your nervous system directly controls the function of every cell, tissue, and organ in your body.
Chiropractors examine the bones and joints of the spine as well as surrounding muscles, ligaments and tissues to detect subluxations in the spine. Subluxations are areas in the spine where abnormal position or movement of the vertebrae interferes with communication within the nervous system resulting in abnormal function in the body. These can be found using various diagnostic methods including palpation, range of motion, orthopedic testing, radiographic findings and other methods.
In order to eliminate these subluxations, a chiropractor will perform gentle and specific adjustments which help your spine to return to its proper position and normal range of movement and enable your body to heal itself. Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) use an integrated approach and individualized treatments to initiate your body’s own healing strength. The result is safe, effective, and lasting treatment that strengthens your body’s resistance to disease.
The focus of NDs is treating the whole person and is not focused solely on symptom relief. Symptoms you experience are your body’s way of telling you that something is out of balance and needs attention. Naturopathic Medicine attempts not only to manage symptoms but also to realign your body and to help alleviate the cause of disease.
Naturopathic doctors treat both acute and chronic health problems including the following:
Treatments vary depending on patient, condition and health care practitioner. The following are licensed treatment options used by Dr. Kristin Heins, ND:
OHIP does not currently cover visits to naturopathic doctors. Most extended health insurance plans include coverage for naturopathic medicine. Contact your insurance provider to learn more about your coverage.
Massage Therapy is a hands on treatment that includes manipulation of muscles, joints, connective tissue, tendons and ligaments. It is used to relieve pain, rehabilitate and maintain physical function and enhance the overall well being of the the patient.
The techniques used during each treatment stretch and loosen connective tissues and muscles. This increases function and range of motion thereby reducing muscle tension and improving relaxation. Treatments may include the following techniques:
Massage therapy can help with many conditions such as:
Reflexology is a holistic therapy that helps balance the body when in stress by improving circulation and calming the nervous system.
This therapy relates to the principle, that there are reflexes in the feet which correspond to every part of the human body. By applying pressure of the finger tips to stimulate the 7,000 nerve ends in the bottom of the feet triggering a reflex reaction which is an involuntary response to stimulus particularly a reflex action of an organ, muscle or gland. This reflex can only occur if the neural pathway between point of stimulation and connecting organ/muscle/gland has no blockage. Reflexology techniques help to clear these pathways so that the body systems can work more efficiently.
Several long term benefits include improved sleep, more energy, a stronger immune system and coping with stress better. Reflexology also improves circulation which helps remove toxins in the body and distribute nutrients.
Reflexology can help many conditions including:
Reflexology is offered as a stand-alone service or can be combined as part of a registered massage therapy session.
Many of our patients who experience foot health problems benefit immensely from custom made orthotics. Even though orthotics only have direct contact with the foot, there are many reasons people can benefit from orthotics that are not necessarily related to foot pain. Pain in the feet, knees, hips or low back is often the result of abnormal foot position and altered walkingbiomechanics. Subtle changes in your feet can affect the way you walk and will affect other joints in your body through the kinetic chain.
This is especially important for pregnant women and women who have had a pregnancy in the past. The added physical stress of pregnancy compounded by an influx of relaxin can cause feet to change shape and often results in discomfort of the feet, which can be helped with custom made orthotics.
Your feet are a complex system of bones, ligaments, muscles and tendons working together to support your body. The arches are under enormous stress and strain every day. If arches lose their ability to flex and return to their normal shape, your feet will not be able to properly absorb the shock of walking. Over time, this added stress can cause break down in the joints of the feet and the rest of the body.
A foot examination in our office will detect these subtle changes and determine whether orthotic therapy can benefit you.
We are proud to offer The Orthotic Group products in our office.
Therapy provides a safe, non-judgmental, and confidential space for you to talk and be listened to. Talking about your feelings, emotions, and experiences is healing. In addition, therapy is a place to learn effective coping strategies for managing different situations.
Scientific research shows that psychotherapy is an effective treatment for concerns such as depression, anxiety, stress and a range of other issues. Once you begin a course of therapy, you may feel lighter, more connected to yourself and your loves ones, and better able to cope with life's challenges.
After two or three sessions, you will start to feel better by talking about your concerns and clarifying your goals. Typically, a series of six to eight sessions will be enough for you to deepen your connection to yourself and your loved ones, develop healthy coping strategies, and enable you to feel empowered. Complex and ongoing issues may require a longer course of therapy.

Physiotherapy is a holistic healthcare profession that aims to help those affected by injury, illness or disability. Physiotherapists specialize in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of a variety of neurological, orthopedic, and cardiorespiratory conditions. In Ontario, individuals can see physiotherapists without a doctor's referral.
Pelvic floor physiotherapy is the assessment and treatment of various conditions including, but not limited to, muscles, bones, connective tissues, and ligaments surrounding the pelvis. Pelvic floor physiotherapy is conducted by registered physiotherapists who have undergone extensive training to specialize in this area of treatment.
The therapist will conduct a detailed internal and external examination of your pelvis and discuss the findings with you to plan a treatment approach that best suits your needs. Treatment may include additional internal pelvic floor therapy, bladder retraining, stretching, and strengthening techniques.
Conditions that can be treated through pelvic floor physiotherapy include:
Osteopathy is an advanced form of manual therapy, based in anatomy and structure and involves precise palpation and assessment. Osteopathic Manual Practitioners work to identify the root cause of symptoms and conditions by removing restrictions and restoring the body’s natural balance. The body is then able to function as designed, inducing self-healing.
Osteopathy is performed through a number of manual techniques including visceral, cranio-sacral therapy and various joint techniques. All movements are gentle and stay within the body’s natural range of motion.
Oestopathy is very effective for pregnant women, babies and children. During pregnancy, Cranial Osteopathic treatment is a safe and effective way of helping the body cope with the additional physical, hormonal and emotional demands of pregnancy and labour. Treatment can help balance the hormonal system and reduce the severity of nausea, vomiting, mood swings and exhaustion and reduce in postural strain and decrease tension in the pelvic floor and diaphragm.
Osteopathy for babies can relieve tension that may have arisen during childbirth. This may include cranial, bone, respiratory and visceral tension. Cranial treatment can also prevent plagiocephaly. In children, treatment can help to correct posture problems and relieve growing pains.
